Battery Life

Apple has not mentioned anything on battery capacity for iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, but they only mentioned that it will now give full-day battery life with their longest battery life ever. In terms of hours, iPhone 14 will give up to 20 hours of Video playback, and iPhone 14 Plus will give up to 26 hours of Video playback. Both iPhones are capable of fast charging and you will be able to get up to 50% charge in around 30 minutes with a 20W adapter or higher.

Both Models have, Built-in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, MagSafe wireless charging up to 15W, Qi wireless charging up to 7.5W, and Charging via USB to a computer system or power adapter.

Performance

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are equipped with an A15 Bionic chip, i.e. last year’s Pro series chip. So you can say that you are getting Pro series performance in non-Pro series for the iPhone. This is one way good and one way bad as well. Cause of this setup, Apple is dividing its user group and deeply restricting the features they can avail from the iPhone.

You can say that the Pro level features are not always used for day-to-day activities and are mainly used by people who are so-called professionals. Thus it’s ok to have two sets of iPhone lineups. But if you see the price tag for the normal series as well, it’s much higher as compared to the competition. Anyway, this will be a dedicated topic for a separate post, let’s focus on iPhone 14.

A15 Bionic

The A15 Bionic chip with 5 core GPU, 6-Core CPU (2 high performance and 4 efficiency cores), and 16-Core Neural Engine pushes the limit of Machine Learning. It also has the Custom Image Signal Processor which powers innovative features in the camera setup. Overall, a very good processor which is ahead of its competition as per the details shared by Apple in last year’s A15 reveals event. Day-to-day tasks will be smooth and demanding tasks like content creation and gaming will be child’s play. An updated internal design delivers better thermal efficiency, so you can stay in the action longer. The Secure Enclave in A15 Bionic protects personal information like your Face ID data, contacts, and more.

Camera

Both iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus comes with a dual camera setup, which consists of a 12MP main camera (26 mm, ƒ/1.5 aperture, sensor-shift optical image stabilization, seven-element lens, and 100% Focus Pixels) and 12MP Ultra Wide camera (13 mm, ƒ/2.4 aperture and 120° field of view, five-element lens). It also comes with a Sapphire crystal lens cover. Camera setup offers 2x optical zoom out; digital zoom up to 5x.

  • Stereo recording

The faster aperture in the camera setup allows better motion freezing, showing vibrant colors with great texture and details. It also delivers a massive 49% improvement in low-light capture, for more vibrant colors and better results in more challenging lighting environments.

Talking about the front camera, iPhone 14 now offers a 12MP TrueDepth camera with ƒ/1.9 aperture, which delivers 38% improvement in low-light capture and videos. The new front camera has AutoFocus for the first time so that it can focus clearly at multiple distances.

iPhone 14 Front Camera

Over time, Apple has greatly improved its camera performance and no doubt it offers the best camera setup for mobile devices. This is made possible with larger sensors and faster aperture, more advanced lenses, intelligent software, and the ground-breaking Apple Silicon. Deep Fusion is a great example of this, which uses the power of a neural engine to combine multiple frames in a single image. This delivers extraordinary details, and preserve even the subtlest texture in mid to lower-light environment.

Deep Fusion by Apple

With iPhone 14, Apple has introduced new technology for best camera captures, the Photonic Engine. This is Apple’s enhanced image pipeline that dramatically improves low-light photos. In comparison to iPhone 13, iPhone 14 front camera provided 2 times enhanced low-light performance, 2 times improved performance on the Ultra Wide camera, and 2.5 times on the new primary camera.

In the video area as well there is now a new Action mode, which offers much more stabilization for those moments on the move. It uses the full sensor with more over-scan and more advanced roll correction to make the video look incredibly stable. It just acts as an in-built gimbal, thus allowing you to take super smooth videos.

All New Action Mode by Apple

Connectivity

iPhone 14 and 14 Plus offers support for a wide range of 5G bands. Also, Apple has improved eSIM capabilities for eSIM with iPhone 14. Now it’s much easier to connect with eSIM and quickly adapt to the transfer plans with Dual eSIM storage & it’s more secure. Along with this, it offers Gigabit LTE with 4×4 MIMO and LAA, Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) with 2×2 MIMO, Bluetooth 5.3, Ultra Wideband chip for spatial awareness, NFC with reader mode, and Express Cards with power reserve.

Safety

iPhone 14 and 14 Plus comes with the same Crash Detection feature which is now available in Apple Watch Series 8 & Apple Watch Ultra. iPhone 14 has a new high dynamic range gyroscope and a new dual-core accelerometer that is able to detect up to 256g force, and it automatically notifies emergency services or emergency contacts in case of a severe car crash.

Emergency SOS

The iPhone 14 Crash Detection works based on,

  • Sudden speed shifts
  • Abrupt changes in direction
  • Cabin pressure changes
  • Loud sound levels of impact
  • Laboratory crash tests
  • Real-world crash data

There is another Emergency SOS feature introduced by Apple, when you are off the grid, without WiFi or Cellular connectivity, it’s called Emergency SOS via Satellite. Connecting to a Cellular network is easy with an available Network tower, but connecting to a Satellite is a big challenge considering Communication Satellite is not stationary and its high above the ground moving at a very high speed of around 15000 miles per hour. To get this connectivity working, Apple has designed and built custom components along with software updates for iPhone so that its antenna can connect with satellite frequency. This is a truly amazing feature and will be very much handy for trekkers and explorers.

Emergency SOS via Satellite Flow

This service will be free for the first 2 years for iPhone 14, it will launch in November and will be only available for the US and Canada to start with.

iPhone 14 Pro & Pro Max Display

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max comes with an Aluminium build with Ceramic Shield protection at the front. The main improvement is the new front design with Pill shape cutout for the camera and FaceID setup. This does not look that great when you compare it with the latest flagship which is available in the market. But the introduction of a new feature called Dynamic Island makes this drawback an all-new feature.

Dynamic Island blends fun and function like never before, consolidating your notifications, alerts, and activities into one interactive place. It’s integrated throughout iOS 16 and can work with all kinds of apps to seamlessly surface what you need, right when you need it. It expands fluidly to get your attention — Hey, you have a call coming in — then tucks away again. You can touch and hold to control your music, keep an eye on a timer, and more. Easy, Intuitive & Delightful. Key highlights are,

  • 31% smaller TrueDepth camera system engineered to free up display space and be even more capable
  • A re-engineered proximity sensor now detects light from behind the display, saving additional space
  • Advanced display algorithms make Dynamic Island responsive wherever you tap, swipe or hold

Camera

The Pro series now have the all-new 48MP Main camera with an advanced quad-pixel sensor. iPhone 14 Pro raises the bar for what 48 megapixels can do, delivering 4x the resolution in ProRAW for mind-blowing detail in every crop. The quad-pixel sensor on the Main camera makes the most of 48 megapixels by adapting to what you’re shooting. For most photos, you want to optimize for light capture. So the new sensor groups four pixels together into one large quad pixel, gathering 4x more light and producing spectacularly better photos at the practical 12MP size. Other times, it’s better to optimize for detail. In those cases, the sensor leverages each individual pixel, providing more creative options for shooting and editing in pro workflows. For the ultimate combination of detail and flexibility, shoot in ProRAW at 48MP resolution. A new machine learning model delivers sharper images and less noise for unprecedented detail. So you can reframe your photos while still retaining amazing resolution.

The quad-pixel sensor allows us to go beyond the three fixed lens of the Pro camera system to create an additional 2x Telephoto. Which expands your zoom options to 0.5x, 1x, 2x and 3x. This new Telephoto uses the middle 12 megapixels of the quad-pixel sensor to deliver full-resolution photos and 4K videos with no digital zoom. And it works in Portrait mode, Time-Lapse, and Pano, which means gorgeous close-up photos and videos are just a tap away.

iPhone 14 Pro Camera

Cinematic mode now shoots in 4K HDR at 24 fps, the film industry standard. Now you can seamlessly edit with other pro footage in 4K at 24 or 30 fps. You can even edit the depth effect after capture. This is the Highest-quality video on the smartphone. Like iPhone 14, this Pro series also comes with Action mode, thus allowing you to shoot stable videos without using any Gimbal.
